Research – Common Security and Defence Policy

The EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) is rapidly evolving. This presents the Netherlands with strategic choices. What role should Europe play in the field of security and defence? Where is the added value and how does it relate to NATO? And which instruments, missions and operations are required?

IOB is evaluating the Dutch commitment to CSDP. The evaluation is divided into two reports on:

  1. the role of CSDP in the European security architecture
  2. the development of civil and military capacity

Key question

What did the Netherlands want to achieve with the Common Security and Defence Policy; how did it try to achieve this; and what did it achieve at the European level?
