Report – Review of the Netherlands development programme for the Palestinian territories, 1994-1999
The plight of the Palestinian people has a long history. The issues of peace and prosperity in the Middle East have often been discussed in political terms only. In the 1990s, the Peace Process demonstrated that peace needs an economic as well as a political basis.
Many donors embarked on large-scale support programmes for the Palestinian territories. Initially, this support was channelled through multilateral and non-governmental organisations. After the signing of the Oslo Accords, the Netherlands increased its support substantially over the years. One of its projects, the planned seaport in the Gaza Strip, has attracted much attention.
