Current research – Social development

IOB is working on a periodic review on the Dutch efforts on the policy themes that fall under article 3 ‘Social progress’ of the budget for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. A periodic review brings together insights from evaluations on the various policy themes. This periodic review covers the period from 2018 to 2024. Insights from the research help the ministry to account to parliament for expenditures made on social development, and to shape future policy.

Policy themes

The policy themes in the periodic review are:

  • global health and sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • women's rights and gender equality
  • civil society
  • education

Central question

What insights exist regarding effectiveness and efficiency of the Netherlands’ development cooperation policy instruments in the field of social development between 2018 and 2024. And what lessons can be learned for future policy?
